You have finally found your new home. Congratulations! But, before you open that bottle of champagne and start celebrating, first you need to unpack and settle in. However, have you thought about sprucing up your home a bit before you do all of that? If you have, now is the perfect time for that. Just think about it – the rooms are empty, the items are in boxes, and the household members have not arrived yet. You will have a black canvas to work on and no distractions – so take advantage of that! If we persuaded you, great. And, do not worry, we are not here only for persuasion purposes, no. We are also here to share with you some interior decoration tips for furnishing a new home. Thus, if this is something that tickles your fancy right now, just keep on reading.
Do Not Start at the Furniture Store
Have you heard of a saying – ‘Do not shop for groceries when you are hungry’? You probably have! And guess what – the same applies to buying furniture. Just because your home is empty right now, do not run to the furniture store to buy something just to fill it up. Yes, you are in desperate need of a couch. But, if you buy a yellow-striped couch or without thinking about its size and how it will actually fit with the rest of your furniture, well, you are stuck with it. Never buy items you like at the store without considering their size and fit first – that is the golden rule, a role you must always follow. Otherwise, you will have to redecorate the entire room so that that yellow-striped couch can fit in nicely. And, let us not joke around – doing that will only end up costing you way too much time, energy, and of course, money.

Measure Everything!
So, we already told you that you should not go furniture shopping without measuring the needed items first. But, that is not the only thing you have to measure, no. When you want to decorate your new home properly, you have to take all the measurements into consideration – the length and width of each room, height of the ceiling, elements that are on the way (stairs, radiators, etc.), and even window openings in case you want to improve your house with attractive window coverings. Moreover, it would be a good idea to measure the existing furniture too, that is, the old furniture that you plan on keeping. To do all of this, you will need a measuring tape, notepad, and a pen.
Declutter Before Unpacking
We live in the age of consumerism. This means that all of us have too many items – some that we need and some that we do not. Our guess is that your moving boxes are probably full of the items that belong to the second group (items that you do not need). But, once you start unpacking and putting all of the items you own in their designated place, the chances that you will overcrowd and mess up your new home are big. So, think about the items you brought to your new home and really think about whether you need them in your new home. Moreover, think about whether they can actually fit in with the vibe you have going on right now. If they cannot – either give them away, donate them, sell them, or let them hit the bin.
If you have plenty of items that you want to keep – be careful when unpacking and assembling them back. In case something is too fragile and delicate, don’t destroy it! Wait for professional movers to come and help you out.

Create a Floor Plan
Now it’s time to get that bird’s eye view. To do that, you need to create a floor plan. And, if you followed our advice from above and took all the room measurements, creating this floor plan will be a piece of cake. You can create a floor plan the old-fashioned way – using a ruler, pen, and paper. But, if you are tech-savvy, why not use software for that? AutoCAD is one of the most affordable and easy-to-use software for creating floor plans and for designing homes. Moreover, using this software, you will not only be able to create a floor plan but you will also be able to add any furniture and see whether it will fit or not. For instance, if you chose an art piece for your home already, you can play around with its position in the ‘digital’ room, instead of moving it yourself.
