Between 3 and 15 percent of Americans have arachnophobia, or a fear of spiders. That may seem like a small number, but consider that the US population is 330 million people — 15 percent of that is nearly 50 million people.

So, if you’re wondering how to keep spiders out of your room, you’re not alone. Many other people have the same fear! And, as such, many other people have figured out ways to keep spiders at bay, too.

Here are five of our best tips.

  1. Try Peppermint

You’re scared of spiders, but do you know what they don’t like? The smell of peppermint, it seems.

Try mixing a few drops of peppermint essential oil with water in a spray bottle. Then, spritz the perimeter of your room to create a border across which spiders won’t want to go.

If you don’t have peppermint oil on hand, you can head to the pantry for a few peppermint tea bags. Yes, people use these in the corners of their room to repel spiders, although you might want to choose another option if you have carpeted floors.

  1. Check for Cracks

Does your room have any walls or doors that connect to the outdoors? If so, you might want to inspect them to see if there are any cracks or holes.

As you know, some spiders are pretty small, so they can sneak through even the smallest crack in your wall or door. Filling in these gaps will keep pesky arachnids from making their way inside.

  1. Eat Somewhere Else

It may be tempting to eat in bed, but beware: when you drop crumbs, you will be inviting insects into your space. These little bugs won’t be spiders, but they will probably be the type of creatures that spiders snack on. As such, spiders might make their way into your space to catch them.

So, avoid eating in your bed or bedroom if you can. If you have to eat in your bedroom, though, be sure to regularly clean surfaces and vacuum floors. That way, crumbs won’t be hanging around for long.

  1. Keep Lights Off at Night

We’re not suggesting you live in the dark. But turn your outside lights off whenever you can. An outdoor bulb shining through the dark will attract all types of bugs, spiders included. You don’t want them close to your home for easy entry when you open windows and doors.

On that note, if you like to have your windows open in your home, be sure to close the blinds at night, too. Otherwise, a bright indoor light will draw insects inside, and they’ll find a direct route through your open window.
