You have purchased a house with a plot that no one has previously taken care of. Or you live in it for a long time, but for the time being, until the time the landscape designer dozing in your soul woke up only now and cannot look indifferently at the surrounding landscape and simply requires changes.
It is very difficult for a novice designer to understand the whole variety of trees, various plants, decorative elements that can now be purchased or ordered quite easily. But we will give some useful tips that will help you take the first steps in landscape design and, possibly, become a good specialist in the future.
Divide the site into separate zones
To do this, you will need to take into account the wishes of all household members, of course, including children, for example:
how many guests can come to you for a weekend break at the same time;
is it planned to install a gazebo to relax from day’s worries with a mug of fragrant tea;
whether you want to isolate yourself from the intrusive glances of your neighbors with a garden with tall trees;
do you have animals that also need a place for walking and entertainment;
whether someone from your family will take care of the beds and grow vegetables.
There can be a lot of such questions, so it is better to think over everything in advance so as not to redo it at great expense in the future.
Determine the illumination and wind rose
Try to track how the sun illuminates your area during the day, as well as the priority direction of the winds. Aspiring landscape designers usually pay little attention to this point.
For example, if the recreation area is on the western side of the garden, then on a hot summer day it will not work nicely to relax under the scorching rays of the sun. And where it is planned to install a brazier, the wind can be so strong that you have to think not about a fragrant barbecue, but about fire safety.
Please note that the direction of the wind can change throughout the year, depending on the season. Better not to rush, think carefully about all the more or less significant subtleties.
Use the advice and experience of others
Read useful tips in various landscaping magazines, search the Internet, watch TV shows. But do not try to scatter and follow all the advice at once or immediately implement ambitious projects.
Imagine the future landscape
Try to represent your site landscape design to scale. Imagine yourself as Gulliver looking at the creations of the Lilliputians. The task is not easy and requires excellent vision and visualization, but it allows avoiding many mistakes at the planning stage. Imagine, for example, that the trees you are now planting will cover the flowerbed in the background in the future. Try to avoid such overlays.
Determine the center of the composition
Designate a center for yourself. The basis of any landscape project is precisely such centers around which the entire composition is built. It can be a large-sized tree, or a row of shrubs, or some kind of man-made composition such as a fountain or garden sculpture.
Make a color combination
One of the most challenging tasks of design is to create a single color symphony of what you set out to furnish. If the resulting composition looks too monotonous, sometimes it is enough to add one or several elements that are strikingly different from the uniform background, so that the landscape literally transforms for the better.
Do it gradually and creatively
Try your hand at something small, for example, decorate the flower bed, but do not forget that over time, the planted plants will grow and fill all the gaping voids.
Experiment
Over time, your tastes and preferences may change, the monotony becomes boring. Feel like a creator-creator capable of any change. Take pleasure in it, after all, you do it for yourself.
Landscaping is so beautiful that it does not limit imagination, the choice of options is endless.
