Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep per night. Not everyone gets enough, though. According to the CDC, that’s true for over 35% of adults in the United States.
Fortunately, there are things that you can do to improve your sleep. For one thing, it helps to get the right bed. After all, they’re not all the same; some provide better support than others and that can make a big difference in terms of your sleep quality.
Thinking of getting a new one? Want to know what to consider when buying new beds? If so, you’re on the right page.
We’ll be going over a few tips below. Keep reading to learn more!
1. Get the Right Mattress
You want a mattress that’ll support your body while keeping your spine in a neutral position. That way, you won’t wake up with back pain.
There are many different types that you can choose from as well. For example, you can get a memory foam mattress, spring mattress, or hybrid mattress. At the end of the day, it depends on your needs and preference.
Take memory foam mattresses, for instance, they’re better at relieving pressure points while you sleep, which makes them suitable for those with hip or shoulder pain.
Also, pay attention to its quality. Avoid mattresses that contain PVCs as they may contain phthalates, which can affect the reproductive system.
2. Choose the Correct Size
Assuming that you’re sharing with a partner, you want to make sure that the bed is wide enough for both of you to lie down side by side without your elbows touching.
Not only that, but the bed itself should be at least 10cm longer than the tallest person sleeping on it.
Another thing to consider is the size of your room. As a general rule, your room should be at least 9ft by 9.6ft if you want to fit a double bed or 9.6ft by 10ft if you want to fit a queen bed.
3. Determine Your Budget
A new bed can cost anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. Generally speaking, the more it costs, the better the quality.
For example, most beds in the $1,000 range (most popular bed brands fall into this category) are made of high-quality memory foam and steel springs. Not only that, but they also come with 10-year warranties. Cheaper beds, in contrast, may not provide much support after a few years.
With that said, you don’t have to go with the most expensive option. There are many mid-range beds that you can get as well—so keep that in mind when you’re comparing bed prices.
And remember, certain accessories (e.g. canopy for double bed) can add to your total costs.
