Owning a pool is a great way to get some exercise and have fun making a splash outdoors.

However, when the cold weather hits, it’s time to start thinking about how to winterize your pool to keep it protected.

Check out these tips to help you learn proper pool winterization techniques for beginners.

Remove Clutter and Do a Deep Clean

Before you focus on the winterization process, start with some crucial cleaning and decluttering. Begin by removing pool toys, furniture, and other accessories that are laying around or in the pool so that everything is out of the way and out of the water.

Once you’ve removed everything including the pool steps, ladders, and skimmer baskets, it’s time to do some deep winter pool cleaning. Make sure the pool is free of debris like dead leaves, insects, and silt. Doing this now makes it easier to prevent algae and mold, and it helps to ensure a proper chemical balance of the water.

How to Winterize Your Pool: Adjust Water Chemistry

When you look at how to winterize your pool the right way, it all starts with balancing the water chemistry. A week before you close the pool for winter, test the water to ensure that the alkalinity level is between around 80 and 150 ppm (parts per million).

You should also check to ensure that the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.6 and that the chlorine level is somewhere between 1 ppm and 3 ppm. If you need to make adjustments, now is the time to do so. Always lean toward the higher side of these levels since they’ll naturally decrease over time until they find a balance.

Lower Water Levels and Cover Your Pool

Before you cover your swimming pool in winter, lower the water about a foot if you have a skimmer cover, and about a one-half foot below the skimmer if you have a skimmer cover. Next, drain the water from your pool equipment and from the water lines leading to the pool.

If you need help prepping your pool, you can contact the professionals like the team at Aqua Premier Pool Services. Once the water levels are right and everything is drained, it’s time to place the cover on top of your pool. Make sure that the cover is properly anchored down and completely secure in order to prevent accidents and to keep your pool water as clean as possible throughout the cold winter months.

Prepare Your Pool for Winter Now

Once you know how to winterize your pool, you can feel confident that it will be clean and ready to use when spring and summer arrive again. Keep these tips in mind so that your pool is clean, has the right chemical levels, and is fully protected from winter’s sting.
