While some might opt to take quick washes in the sink, nothing compares to a real shower. It’s a luxury every home should have.

Are you wondering how to install a shower? While a basic shower installation might not be too difficult, additional showerheads and other fixtures might seem puzzling.

Luckily, with the right guide, you can finish the task. Let’s explore how to install a shower properly.

Gather Your Materials

The materials you will need to gather include a shower pan, shower walls, a shower door, a showerhead, and plumbing supplies. You will also prepare tools, such as a drill, screwdriver, and level.

Once you have gathered your materials, follow the instructions that came with your shower kit.

Turn off the Main Water Shutoff Valve

Before you start installing a shower, make sure you turn off the main water shutoff valve. This will prevent any water from coming into your home while you’re working. Once the valve is turned off, you can start installing your shower.

Remove the Old Showerhead and Shower Arm

To remove the old showerhead and shower arm, start by unscrewing the shower head from the shower arm. Use a pair of pliers to grip the showerhead and unscrew it in a counterclockwise motion.

If the showerhead is difficult to remove, apply some penetrating oil to the area where the showerhead and shower arm meet. Then, wait a few minutes before trying to unscrew the showerhead again. Once it is removed, unscrew the shower arm from the pipe coming out of the wall.

Apply Plumbers Tape to the Shower Arm Threads

Apply plumbers tape to the shower arm threads. This will help to create a watertight seal and prevent leaks. After, screw on the shower head and hand tighten the connection.

Connect the Shower Arm

Take the new shower arm and thread it onto the shower pipe. Always use a pipe wrench to tighten the new shower arm in place. Finally, hand-tighten the large nut to secure the new shower arm.

Turn the Water Back on and Check for Any Leaks

If there are any leaks, tighten the connections until the leak stops. You may need to use some plumber’s putty at the connections to secure them. If there are none, you’re finished!

There may be times that your shower will need repair and you’re busy enough to do it on your own. You can seek help from professionals who offer services in plumbing design and repiping.
